Different types of simultaneous interpreting

Simultaneous interpreting is a type of ‘real-time’ spoken translation of one language into another. Interpreters generally work in a soundproof interpreting booth, instantaneously translating what a speaker is saying. They talk at the same speed as the speaker.

For simultaneous interpreting, simultaneous translators always work in pairs (at least). Interpreters cannot keep up the mental capacities and concentration required for longer than 20 to 30 minutes. They work as a team and take it in turns to ensure continuous translation. Simultaneous interpreting needs translation equipment, including booths and translation headsets. This kind of instantaneous translation is often used during conferences, seminars, symposiums and other similar events.

Whisper interpreting

This is similar to simultaneous interpreting but the interpreter whispers the translation for an individual or small group. This method is generally used when just a small number of the audience does not understand the source language.

Whisper interpreting can sometimes be used for 2 or 3 listeners without any interpreting equipment. For more listeners, Connected Language Services offers interpreting equipment for hire.
